Chapter 12

Wade had a rough night. Between his aching arm and intrusive thoughts of Daisy, this time with her top completely off, he’d rolled around in bed like an alligator. Good thing he didn’t have to share his bed with anyone. No one pulling on the covers, complaining he didn’t know how to share, and no one kicking him to get more room. Lord knew that would be Daisy, were she in his bed. She’d probably clock him should he dare snore and wake her up.

Okay, that’s enough thinking about Daisy in your bed.

Nope. Not going there. Moving on.

She hadn’t brought up giving her any more lessons since the night of the Riverwalk, and he was just fine and dandy with that. He wasn’t going to be forced to take on that responsibility. Okay, not forced. Wrong word. Um…privileged? Yeah, much better word for that deal. So, he wasn’t going to be privileged to introduce her into the world of sex. That was good. Yeah. Because with that privilege came a huge responsibility. And he didn’t need that piled on top of everything else. So, yeah, great news.

Even if he was certain he could make it good for her. More than good. How about fantastic? Her first time should be memorable. Spectacular. It should be a high benchmark for any other fools to try and beat. Not that they could if they even tried. Oh, he’d make sure of it.

His mother must be having a field day in heaven, looking in on him now and then, watching him tied up in knots over Daisy. Having a good laugh at what she claimed he’d never be able to fight. Destiny. He’d been against the notion of this supposed “destiny” of his for years because Daisy was young and sweet. Too innocent for the likes of him. He’d never be good enough for her, and she’d never be “bad” enough for him.

But his mother firmly believed and insisted to her dying day: he and Daisy were meant for each other. She’d seen it in a dream.

He glanced at his mother’s framed photo on the mantel. “You think this is funny, don’t you?”

He forced himself to do the physical therapy exercises he loved to avoid. This time before sunrise, so he couldn’t talk himself out of them. Afterward, the pain was intense enough for him to count the pills he had left and allow himself two.

Then he had his coffee, showered, dressed, and went out before dawn to start his day.

Since he’d need to move the cattle to another pasture for grazing, he drove the ATV out to a good patch of land and pounded posts into dirt to create the start of a cattle drive lane. That took him several hours after which he realized he was hungry. He hadn’t thought ahead to bring a lunch pail with him like his father used to, but then again all he had in the kitchen were casseroles. Time for a run to the General Store at some point and load up on cold cuts.
